It’s the most common sentence heard from everyday heroes. People say it when they run into a burning building to rescue those stuck inside. People say it when they save someone from being run over by a train. Gordon Brock said it when he rescued a woman from her car in a flash flood.
Brock waded out into water so far that he couldn’t touch the bottom any more. Asking the woman to get on his back so he could get her out resulted in him being pushed under the water. He kept calm and grabbed the car for support and got his head above the water to breathe again. He later apologized for possibly damaging the woman’s side mirror in his effort to avoid drowning.
He agreed the woman was lucky to survive, but simply said anyone would have done what he did. A hero indeed.
