Good People Day

Gary Vaynerchuk has proclaimed today, “Good People Day”.  I found out about it from Hugh McLeod’s Twitter feed.   That sounds like something the Hero Workshop can get involved in, so I’ve got two examples of heroism from the last couple of days.

Matt Croucher threw himself on a grenade after he accidentally tripped a wire that was part of a booby trap.  The story just came out of the event that happened in early February in Afghanistan.  Croucher yelled grenade and then lay down with his backpack pressed down on the grenade.  The explosion launched his backpack 30ft and embedded shrapnel in his helmet and body armour.  He came away with some minor injuries but his pack absorbed most of the force.  His buddies weren’t injured and they have nominated him for the Victoria Cross.

Norm Moreen jumped on a crocodile when it had grabbed his wife in northern Australia.  With her leg firmly in the mouth of the saltwater crocodile, Wendy Patherick knew she was going to be pulled into the water for a death roll.  Moreen jumped on it’s head and gouged it’s eyes, forcing it to let go.  He said, “When you need to save someone that you love, you just do it.  It’s pretty scary, but you have no time for thinking, you know?”

The good news is that there are good people everywhere! They don’t wear badges or crowns, but if we are attentive we will see them in our lives. Best of all, we can be heroes when we affirm the good people we encounter and hold up their goodness as a light for others, just as you are doing here! I share your commitment to Goodness with my own work at Thanks for each hero story, especially those of amazing and often unheralded women!
