You’re going to see lots of abuses of the word hero in the next few weeks as the World Cup has kicked off plus the finals of the NHL and NBA come to a close. Lets just repeat that scoring a goal is never heroic.
As this article from the New York Daily News says, heroes don’t do their thing for the glory. They do it because it’s the right thing to do. The article is referring to the latest subway hero who walked away after their heroic act, but it could be talking about any real action hero.
I cringe every time I hear a sports figure being described as heroic for some action on the field, court, or rink. A defender heroically saved a goal. A striker heroically kicked the winning goal. There are so many words these commentators could use, but they keep coming back to hero. I don’t think we’re in such dire need of heroes that we have to create them. They’re all over the place – just have a look.
