Thirty years ago today, people entered cinemas around the country taking a chance on a film that was unlike anything they’d seen and like everything they’d seen. George Lucas had taken the familiar story that’s deeply embedded in all of us and put it in a space fantasy that was created from scratch. He gave us a hero with humble beginnings and an exciting destiny. He showed us the power of what was right against what was wrong. He provided an iconic evil. But he put in a universe of new aliens with a history of their own. He developed the Force. He gave us lightsabers and the Millennium Falcon. Star Wars was new and it was ancient. It changed the world and it continued the tradition.
