I’ve often said to kids during Hero Workshop visits that I wouldn’t be surprised if J.K. Rowling had written Harry Potter with a copy of the hero’s journey beside her. It’s very easy to check off Joseph Campbell’s steps as you read through the first Potter book. From the very mundane world Harry starts in, to his literal call to adventure in the form of letters, and the appearance of a supernatural aid named Hagrid, Harry has the typical experience.
The mythic hero website has a detailed description of each step for the first six books. It’s not hard to see the hero’s journey through each book and it’s not hard to attribute some of the books’ success to this. The highest grossing movies in history all have strong hero’s journeys and the Harry Potter books are among the highest selling books in history. It’s no coincidence.
