This guest post is from once and future Hero Construction Company member, Kit Bennett, who is now teaching in Ann Arbor.
George McFly catches Biff Tannen hitting on Lorraine, George’s crush. Lorraine is not enjoying the advances and looks distressed. Biff tells George to ‘just turn around and walk away’. George chooses to stay and confront Biff. We see this decision materialize through the slow clenching of George’s fist. He makes the choice, despite knowing that he will most likely get his butt kicked. He makes the choice, because it is the right thing to do.
How often are we faced with a difficult situation, which could be simply solved by walking away? Or by turning a blind eye. How often do we make the tough choice despite the obvious risk?
You are going to be faced by a number of difficult situations over the coming days, weeks, months and years. Be like George McFly and choose not to ‘just turn around and walk away’. Biff frequently gives George the best advice – “Think McFly, Think.” Think about what decision you’re making or not making. Confront your fears, confront what is wrong in front of you. As you do, you’ll be increasing your own heroic imagination as well as that of the people around you.
